Overbore

In general, the term overbore refers to a cartridge that has a powder capacity greater than what can be efficiently consumed in the barrel chambered for the given cartridge.

Any significant amount of powder (propellant) that is not consumed, through burning (or deflagration) while in the barrel in the process of propelling the bullet out of the barrel is lost. It is powder that must be "moved" in the barrel, along with the bullet, by propellant that has started burning (deflagration). This can lead to an inefficiency in performance of the given cartridge/rifle combination.

Overbore cartridges have been likened to/as cartridges that also show a significant increase in barrel wear through throat erosion.
